Aesthetically, I love the ASUS Eee PC 1018P. The surface texture has a grain to it that resists fingerprints and looks stylish. It's compact, lightweight and easy to cart around. The display is bright and crisp. The keyboard has great response. The scroll slider on the touchpad is brilliant design. The touchpad click is rather stiff so clicking and dragging is difficult. I hope there is some easier way to do that without a mouse. I upgraded to Windows 7 professional which was easy albeit pricey considering the price of the computer. Windows 7 Starter seems like a bit of a scam. If I'd known, I would have searched for a system already installed with an upgraded OS. Don't expect to install software from a disc. Keep that in mind. It is what it claims to be. My complaint with it is this: the power cord! It's bulky. For a computer that is intended to be ultra portable you would have thought that ASUS would supply a minimalist power cord. The cord is in 2 parts and folded carefully takes up almost as much space as the darn computer. That really bums me out. The 1015 model has more battery options for extended battery life. There are so many models of the Eee it's hard to sort them all out. Their website allows you to do side-by-side comparisons so check in there first to make sure you're getting the model that suits your needs. I'm pleased with my purchase but I can't help thinking that maybe there was another model that may have been better. High marks overall if you just ignore the fact that there are so many other options in a netbook.

This Asus Eee 1018P-PU27 is an amazing 10.1" netbook. As a grad student in global health, I use this Asus 1018P for class notes. As a journalist I use it for interview notes, and for viewing short news videos. On-the-go internet browsing is a breeze.
This netbook is pre-loaded with Windows 7 Starter and Microsoft Office Starter, which I immediately and easily upgraded to Windows 7 Professional and Microsoft Office Professional. Spend the $24 and upgrade to 2 GB RAM memory (it comes with 1 GB.) This Asus model is significantly faster than others with its N550 dual-core processor; the two USB 3.0 ports and Bluetooth 3.0 add to its speed and efficiency, not to mention the optimized 10 hours of battery life. I get 8, good enough.
Consumer Reports rates the Asus #1 for 10" netbooks (Amazon offers a newer model, which I purchased). At this writing the Asus 1018P has received 18 international awards. I spent considerable time researching and testing netbooks of all kinds, brands, and processors. The most annoying problem was too-touchy touchpads, with cursors jumping around the screen. No problem, so far, with this Asus model. BTW, I also bought the magenta neoprene sleeve to protect and carry the Asus. Looks cool.
I'll be traveling and will need a reliable machine that can slip into my purse. The Asus 1018P-PU27 fits--not only in my purse--but also fits the bill.

I don't play games, work in graphic design, or crunch serious numbers, so I figured that a netbook would be the perfect purchase after my old Dell laptop crapped out on me for the final time. After a month of using 1018P, I am quite pleased with my purchase.
The build is sturdy and attractive: compact design, brushed aluminum coating, chiclet keyboard--almost like a mini Macbook. Aesthetics aren't everything, but it's nice to have a PC on my desk that isn't a cartoonish plastic abortion. It runs nice and quiet too. The temperature also remains cool despite the EEE not sucking serious wind. The most glaring design flaw comes in the form of the trackpad. Clicking takes a surprising amount of finger strength. And selecting items and dragging them? Oh man. Get a mouse.
The hardware specs are nothing special. Par for the netbook course, really. With the right software, the 1018P can easily be a robust daily computing solution. The problem is that it doesn't come with that; we get Windows 7 Starter instead. Even with pristine factory settings, the operating system is an absolute dog. It's a shamelessly crippled piece of crap that serves only to squander the potential that this machine provides. Don't be a chump: install GNU/Linux or XP on this instead.
All in all, this is the perfect little netbook for a computer hobbyist like me. Now that I've tweaked things just how I like them, it serves me well as my primary computer. However, due to the inclusion of a godawful resource hog of an OS (which is further bloated by pre-installed crapware), I can easily see this becoming a needlessly frustrating experience for casual computer users who just want something that runs well out of the box. The fault for that almost certainly lies on Microsoft's end, but it can't be ignored in this review. I'd give it four stars overall though. Like I said: very satisfied.
